  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) March 11, 2016 - Born in Istanbul, Turkish artist Gülay Yüksel currently works from her studio in Ankara, Turkey. Her oil paintings linger at the crossroads of figurative work and abstraction, depicting women in gorgeous tones, among which blues and oranges predominate. Trained in art history and fine art teaching at Eskişehir Anadolu University, Yüksel soon found herself questioning the role of women in an Islamic society. She believes that each woman is provided with a rich inner world that may be accessed through introspection. "When you look from the outside you may see one woman," she says, "but that woman, whoever she is, carries more women inside."

Yüksel describes her paintings as "psychological." Her recent work is heavily influenced by Dr. Robert Plutchik, whose Wheel of Emotions provided the basis for each painting. Plutchik presented eight primary emotions from which a wider spectrum emerged, creating the psychological equivalent of color theory. While psychology drives her work, Yüksel is also fascinated by the physical act of painting. "For me," she says, "painting is a game that is played within its own internal discipline."
