  • Chicago, IL (1888PressRelease) December 25, 2011 - Alexander Hilton is 2 years old, but has lived outside the confines of hospital walls for only about two months of his life. Today, thanks to help from the Angie's List Wishmakers program and three Chicagoland companies, he's one step closer to going home - and might even get there by Christmas Day.
Alex suffers fromHemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare disorder of the immune system primarily affecting young infants and children. The illness was discovered after his mother, Myriam Lallemand, recognized serious symptoms in her newborn and sought medical treatment. Alex is being treated at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. His parents, both of whom have lost their jobs since Alex became sick, trade weeks being with Alex while the other stays home with his two siblings in Chicago Heights.

George Rossano, a family friend, reached out to the Angie's List Wishmakers, a program that grants home improvements wishes for those in need. In describing the family's situation, he said that without several modifications, Alex would never get to go home.
    .
Rossano has taken on many of the updates himself, but he isn't a heating and cooling expert. Three local companies responded to the Wishmakers request to renovate the home's heating, ventilation and cooling system, offering a total of more than $3,600 worth of home repairs.

"After seeing the request, I knew we had to help," said Michael McLaughlin, owner of Polar Heating and Air. "I called my suppliers at Aprilaire and Guardian and got them on board with the project too."

Before McLaughlin's team installs the top-of-the-line air cleaner and purification system, another company donated air duct cleaning services to ensure the air flowing through the home will be safe when Alex returns home.

Additionally, another company has offered to provide air conditioning repairs and replace the family's air conditioner this spring if necessary.

"This little boy has endured more pain and suffering than any adult could even bear to imagine," Angie Hicks, founder of Angie's List said. "The help from these local companies means Alex may get to spend Christmas at home for the first time in his life."
