  • Bergen-Passaic, NJ (1888PressRelease) August 25, 2010 - When Lee Meyer moved to Heritage Pointe of Teaneck from Florida in January, she could not have imagined her new home would yield a new passion. The resident of the elegant full-service retirement community is now the first non-staff member that new residents often meet upon moving in, a commitment she has taken on with joy.

Soon after Meyer moved into Heritage Pointe, her enthusiasm for the community became evident, and she was asked by Director of Community Relations Saundra Pomerantz to help on the welcoming committee. "I immediately said 'Count me in,'" Meyer recalled. She greets all newcomers, introduces them to other residents, dines with them on their first night, and regales them with an insider's perspective on life at Heritage Pointe.

"It's just like living in a hotel," explained Meyer, who was impressed right away when she first toured the community last year. "It has so much to offer, and it's so well kept. I don't have to shop, I don't have to cook and it provides socializing which is so important." She is quick to note, however, that she still loves to bake and keeps her freezer stocked with home-baked cakes to bring with her when she visits with friends or entertains in her bright, spacious apartment. Meyer cited the community's proximity to Manhattan as another big advantage to living there and that she gets to see her family in Westchester County and South Jersey fairly often as well.

It was the social aspect at Heritage Pointe that really ignited Meyer's positive outlook. "It's really like family here," she explained. "Being around people is most important, especially as you get older. I love sitting after dinner and talking to everyone. And I love helping other residents," she added.

As the official resident "ambassador," Meyer makes sure the new residents meet others on their first day in their new home and answers questions about life there. She has a stack of thank-you letters from new residents who she has spoken to, expressing appreciation for making them feel so at home and happy they made the move. Her enthusiasm for the Heritage Pointe lifestyle is contagious; several prospective residents who had the opportunity to talk to Meyer have decided to move there after spending time with her.

Meeting and Greeting New Friends, Old Connections
At Heritage Pointe, Meyer has discovered some interesting personal connections by chance with visitors and other residents, the most remarkable one occurring on the night she arrived at the community to live. She'd arrived at Heritage Pointe after her flight from Florida, bundled up in her new winter coat. Another resident in the lobby was wearing the same exact coat and commented on it. After a few questions, the women realized they'd both moved from the same Florida community within weeks of each other and had even lived in the same building but never met until that moment. A new friendship was kindled.

Since then, conversations with prospective and new residents have uncovered several shared acquaintances from her native Germany, which Meyer left to come to this country just before World War II broke out in Europe. "It's amazing after all these years to find out I knew this one's husband and that one's friend," she noted.

Meyer said she enjoys the lectures at Heritage Pointe and wants to start a bridge or mahjong game for residents. She also likes the theme dinners and said that those special events are good opportunities for visitors to come see what Heritage Pointe is all about. She still loves to travel and is looking forward to an upcoming cruise. "It's so nice to just be able to go without a worry."
