  • Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV (1888PressRelease) May 27, 2011 - Washington, D.C. - The technology award was presented to local nonprofits that have demonstrated leadership and an unwavering commitment to keeping the arts in education.

LEAP's President and CEO, Dr. Clayton Lawrence, expresses his support of the arts and humanities.

"This year's initiative was a tremendous success," Dr. Lawrence said. "I am humbled by the overwhelming response and support from our local leaders and partners, all of whom were instrumental in allowing LEAP to share this technology award with the students in the District of Columbia."

The technology award was presented to three nonprofit organizations located in Washington: Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Society for the Arts in Health Care, and City Arts - all of which have been faced with difficulty in continuing their arts and technology programs due to numerous budget cuts that have severely impacted educational funding.

On Wednesday, Dr. Lawrence visited the Duke Ellington School of the Arts to meet with faculty members and students to share the Company's philosophy and vision in support of the arts in education.

"Lawrence Executive Alliance of Professionals is facilitating the support and development of the 21st century artist, writer and developer," said Mark Williams, Chief of Literary Media & Communication at Duke Ellington School of the Arts.

Finding adequate funding and resources for arts programs is a challenge for Duke Ellington. Much of the school's budget comes from the District of Columbia Public School System (DCPS). However, the school relies heavily on the support of community contributions, alumni support, and donations.

Williams shared his insight into the challenges of public schools and the importance of supporting arts and education.

"Students must be able to master science," Williams said. "They [students] must be able to read critically, think critically and understand abstract concepts. LEAP is allowing students to advance and move forward to the 21st century."

The "Teachers for Technology" Award is one of LEAP, LLC's many major philanthropic initiatives held throughout the year. This initiative is advancing the artistic talents of young students in the District of Columbia, in addition to providing educators the opportunity to expose students to cutting edge technological advancements in science and computers.
