  • (1888PressRelease) July 26, 2015 - About the Book: There is a land beneath our feet, a land of giant caves, simmering lakes, strange creatures and people.

For centuries our two worlds - Goneunderland and Upoverland - have co-existed, together but apart. But the discovery of a legendary blue crystal of immense power threatens to put the two worlds on a collision course.

Goneunderland's king, his rebellious nobles, the Luxian priests, and the scheming Lady Euphansia Fish all covet the stone, and a powerful Upoverland energy magnate will stop at nothing to get his hands on this unrivalled source of power.

The Knappler, the miner who found the crystal, flees with his treasure to Upoverland hoping for sanctuary. The chase is on.

    About the Author:
    S. D. Birkbeck, the author of this wonderfully imaginative story, lives in North London. Born in New Zealand, Simon has been living in the UK for the past 18 years. He wrote for several New Zealand newspapers and was an online subeditor for Timesonline and FT.com in London. Simon is presently senior content manager at financial communications company MerchantCantos.

    Excerpt from the Book:
"Accepting Erazmus was unlikely to budge, the Knappler reached under his tatty shirt for the leather pouch. Untying the drawstring, he let a flat, solid object slide into his hand. Slowly the Knappler raised his hand. Half-expecting something to come crashing down on his head, Erazmus took a nervous step backwards. But the Knappler kept his arm high and outstretched as if it were a radio antennae seeking a signal. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the object began to absorb what little light the tunnel could offer. A feint glow appeared in the middle of a large crystal. For the first time that evening, Erazmus's opened mouth could offer no words. Before him he began to witness what the people of Goneunderland had only ever read about. The stories, he always assumed, were apocryphal, nothing more than ancient hokum dreamt up to keep the Knapplers digging. But here it was, in front of him."
