  • (1888PressRelease) February 21, 2020 - The WiMAX Forum, the leading organization that certifies and promotes the compatibility and interoperability of broadband wireless products based upon IEEE Standard 802.16, is pleased to announce the first Aeronautical Mobile Airport Communication System (AeroMACS) Workshop hosted by Lisbon Airport.

On 1-2 April, 2020, ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal in cooperation with the WiMAX Forum and support by EUROCONTROL will host an AeroMACS Workshop at Alameda das Comunidades Portuguesas, 1700-111 Lisboa, Portugal. The program includes AeroMACS Demo with visit to the airside and system, presentations, worldwide cases and successful implementations. The purpose of the workshop is to foster collaboration between key players in the aviation industries.

AeroMACS is a standardized C-Band airport surface communications system based on the IEEE 802.16 standard for mobile broadband data operating in the protected aviation spectrum band from 5091 MHz to 5150 MHz. It is the wireless solution for the next generation standard in Air Traffic Management (ATM) selected by EUROCONTROL and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and ratified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for the provision of dedicated aeronautical communication services for safety and regularity of flight on the airport surface globally.

“ANA has been continuously investing to maintain and improve the quality of its services, and AeroMACS provides the safety and security needed at the airport surface,” stated Jose Rafael Charrua, Head of Electronics, IT and Automation at ANA. “I am delighted to be part of the Workshop and share the improvements that the AeroMACS System brought to Lisbon Airport.”

ANA is responsible for managing 10 airports in mainland Portugal (Lisbon, Porto, Faro and Beja), in the Azores (Ponta Delgada, Horta, Santa Maria and Flores) and in Madeira (Madeira e Porto Santo). ANA is integrated within VINCI Airports network, which is responsible for managing a wide network of airports worldwide, assuring the development and commercial utilisation of 45 airports - 12 in France, 10 in Portugal, 3 in Cambodia, 1 in Chile, 3 in Japan, 6 in the Dominican Republic and 1 in Brazil, 1 in Costa Rica, 1 in Sweden, 1 in Northern Ireland and 5 in United States of America.

“The aviation industry calls for more secure networks and AeroMACS is taking off at airports worldwide. ANA experience with AeroMACS has helped reinforce, scale, accelerate and leverage the AeroMACS market as the technology advances,” said Declan Byrne, WiMAX Forum President. The demonstration event in April 2020 will provide the aviation community with the tools to succeed and address today’s broadband needs on the airport surface.”

The WiMAX Forum is hosting and participating in aviation events throughout 2020 to share the latest AeroMACS developments and increase awareness about the technology. On Wednesday, 11 March from 14:00 to 16:00 at the Aireon Spotlight Stage, collocated with World ATM Congress in Madrid, Spain, the WiMAX Forum and member companies are hosting the AeroMACS 2020 – Madrid. Participation is free and open to all World ATM Congress attendees.

On 21-23 April at the ICNS Conference in Herndon, Virginia, the WiMAX Forum will host a presentation "AeroMACS Considerations to Foster Innovation in Air Transportation." As details are finalized, we will be certain to keep you informed. For more information about our events, please visit: http://wimaxforum.org/Page/Events/Summits-Participatory-Events
