  • New Orleans, LA (1888PressRelease) December 01, 2011 - The famous Joy Theater in New Orleans, Louisiana, is making a grand comeback on December 29 this year. The theater that was once amongst the favorite destination for cinema lovers is now all set to return. Besides screening movies, the theater will now be an apt platform for music concerts, theatrical productions and stand-up comedy. In addition to these, the theater will also be available for private get-togethers and corporate events.

The opening of Joy Theater dates back to February 1947, when Lucille Ball starrer movie 'Lover Come Back' was screened here. Built by Joy Houck and Levere Montgomery, this theater had a decent seating capacity. Also, a special room called the Crying Room was meant for parents and their kids to enjoy the movie without causing disturbance to the rest of the audience.

But with the spurt in the multiplexes in the city, the popularity of the Joy Theater experienced a drastic decline. It was not able to compete with other theaters that had multiple screens equipped with modern features. In 2003, it finally succumbed to the competition and had to shut down. Later in 2005, this theater was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

The NOLA Theater District LLC bought the Joy Theater in July 2011 with an aim to rebuild it into a remarkable theater. The officials of the NOLA Theater District LLC had put in a lot effort and money on its renovation. The revamped theater will now have a state-of-art light and sound system. There will be video monitors, fixed bars, on-sight dressing rooms and an in-built stage in the new theater. However, there are certain features of the theater that have been retained like the balcony and the theater's iconic monumental sign.

The countdown has begun. The reopening of the Joy Theater will kick off with the performance of Irma Thomas and Lance Ellis. The celebrity line-up includes the Soul Rebels, Cyril Neville, Tribe 13. New Year celebrations include performances by Kermit Ruffins, the Barbecue Swingers and Big Sam's Funky Nation.

Tickets will go on sale from Dec 1, 2011. For further information contact at 504-528-9569.
