  • (1888PressRelease) November 30, 2011 - Research into diabetes monitoring has led to a new breakthrough in the way that insulin levels may in the future be measured. Scientists have this week reported the successful laboratory testing of an electrochemical sensor device that has the potential to measure blood sugar levels from tears instead of blood. This advance could revolutionize the way diabetics monitor their daily blood insulin levels.

    The report, compiled by Mark Meyerhoff and colleagues, appears in the ACS journal, Analytical Chemistry. The researchers have been quoted as saying;

    "It may be possible to measure tear glucose levels multiple times per day to monitor blood glucose changes without the potential pain from the repeated invasive blood drawing method."

    Current glucose meters or diabetes monitors require diabetics to execute a pinprick of their finger on a daily basis, which can be an uncomfortable experience, leading some diabetics to neglect their regular diabetes monitoring schedule.

    The diabetes monitoring research on glucose levels in tears has thus far been undertaken successfully only in rabbits. These tests have shown that the level of glucose in tears is very similar to the level glucose in the blood.

    While much more research is currently needed before new forms of glucose meters can be manufactured, this scientific breakthrough in the field of diabetes products will be welcomed by diabetics who find the current blood testing method uncomfortable.

    It may be many years yet before a new range of diabetes products and glucose meters can be developed to perform daily tests on tears, rather than blood, but this research is a huge milestone in that journey. In the meantime, there are a number of different diabetes monitoring products on the market that aim to make the blood testing process as quick and painless and possible.
