Satish Babu to head ICFOSS

  • (1888PressRelease) February 28, 2011 - Trivandrum, Kerala, India - The official inauguration of ICFOSS was done by Sri. V. S. Achuthanandan, Chief Minister of Kerala in Technopark on February 24, 2011. Ishita Roy IAS, Director, Kerala State IT Mission, and other dignitaries from Technopark and the Government, attended the ceremony. ICFOSS was formed with a view to provide technical assistance for implementing FOSS in government projects in Kerala. ICFOSS will also focus in promoting the use of Open Source Software in the national and international levels.

    During the inaugural speech, the Chief Minister said, "The IT Policy of Kerala advocates the use of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in all Government projects with special focus on education and e-governance. Kerala was the pioneer in adopting FOSS for e-governance and now other states are following suit. I reiterate that this leadership position should be maintained by the State. ICFOSS is a step in this direction."

    Speaking on the occasion, Ishita Roy IAS, Director, KSITM, said, "ICFOSS hopes to make Kerala an international FOSS destination. The centre aims to promote the use of free software in all government projects and provide technical assistance for the state government while developing e-governance solutions."

    Speaking on the occasion, Satish Babu, said, "The vision of ICFOSS is to become a leading research organisation in Free and Open Source model thus contributing towards sustainable development of society and stimulate economic development in the region. We hope ICFOSS will act as a converging point of experts, students, officials and the public."

    Satish Babu is a promoter and currently the President of InApp, an IT Services company based out of the US, Japan and India. Recently, he has been elected as the Vice President-cum-President Elect of the Computer Society of India for 2011-12. He has been an IT consultant, designer, developer and trainer for nearly two decades. He is an active proponent of Open Source Technologies and is the Convenor, Special Interest Group of CSI on Free and Open Source Software (SIG-FOSS). He is currently the Chair of IEEE Kerala Section, the Asia-Pacific Coordinator for the Geographic Unit Operations Committee, IEEE Computer Society (2009, 2010, 2011) and Co-ordinator, Distinguished Visitor Programme of IEEE Computer Society (2011). He has been a Visiting Professor at several institutions including the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIM-K) and the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K). He is a co-founder and Executive Secretary of the Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment (SPACE), an inter-disciplinary society with participation from the Government of Kerala.
