  • (1888PressRelease) December 25, 2012 - ANAHEIM, Calif. - St. Catherine's Academy, a military school for boys in California, held its second annual "Boxing Day" on December 14, 2012. During the special day, the youngest cadets in 3rd -6th grade swapped roles with the cadet leadership, which is comprised of 7th and 8th graders. In all, 21 underclassmen will took on leadership roles for the day.

"We wanted to institute Boxing Day at St. Catherine's Academy in order to get our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders more involved in leadership roles while also adding another fun day for the cadets," says Colonel Barry Bizzell, commandant at St. Catherine's Academy.

In the British military, the tradition of Boxing Day is to switch junior soldiers into senior leadership roles for the day while the actual senior officers and Staff Non-commissioned Officers assume lesser, working roles in their commands. Boxing Day in England is normally held in December 26.

St. Catherine's has a unique military tradition, well-known for teaching self-discipline, respect, and leadership to its students. Cadets in grades three and above participate in daily marching and drill exercises. They also earn medals and ribbons for good behavior and move through ranks that simulate military roles. Participation in the military program teaches cadets important life skills, such as overcoming obstacles and challenges, planning, following directions, working on a team, and leading others. The military department is led by Colonel Barry Bizzell, U.S. Marine Corps (retired), Captain Angel Ramos, U.S. Army, and Staff Sergeant Tyr May, U.S. Marine Corps.

St. Catherine's differs from other military schools for boys in California because it is also a Catholic school and also because it serves a younger population of students.

St. Catherine's Academy, founded in 1889 by the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, is Catholic military school for boys in California, serving kindergarten through 8th grade. The school offers both day and boarding opportunities.
