World Soundtrack Awards Announces Discovery of the Year Nominees

Top Quote The 15th Annual World Soundtrack Awards have selected the nominees for The Discovery of the Year. The Discovery award recognizes "upcoming" composers who have scored less than six films. The amazing part of this is that most of the composers who have won or been nominated for the award have gone on to score blockbusters and/or have won Oscars, Golden Globes or BAFTA awards. End Quote

Many legendary and accomplished composers received the Discovery of the Year award at the beginning of their careers. Artistic Director Patrick Duynslaegher states "If you are looking for the next generation of great composers, you just have to look at the World Soundtrack Discovery Awards where composers as Michael Giacchino, Gustavo Santaolalla, Craig Armstrong and Abel Korzeniowski were acknowledged by our Advisory Board early on in their careers.'. Last year, Daniel Pemberton was discovered by the WSA Advisory Board. This year Pemberton scored The Man From U.N.C.L.E and the critically acclaimed Steve Jobs. Pemberton stated "It was a wonderful honor to be selected as the Discovery of the Year at the last World Soundtrack Awards - to follow in the footsteps of so many great composers like Michael Giacchino, Gustavo Santaolla, and Craig Armstrong who've been given the accolade before was pretty humbling. Since then it feels like I haven't stopped and I'm ridiculously excited to hear the Brussels Philharmonic premiere pieces from my latest scores to Steve Jobs and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. at this year's concert. Plus I'm going to drink a lot of Belgium beer too. Hurrah."

The Discovery of the Year Award is aimed at encouraging emerging talent, who at the current WSA eligibility had scored no more than six theatrically released films (excluded are shorts, TV-formats & documentaries.) To qualify as an eligible score, the motion picture had to receive its world première screening between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015.

The nominees for Discovery of 2015 are:
    - Alex Ebert for 'A Most Violent Year'
    - Dominic Lewis for 'Spooks: The Greater Good'
    - Antonio Sanchez for 'Birdman'
    - Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow for 'Ex Machina'
    - Zhiyi Wang for 'But Always' & 'Highway of Love

A group of 34 music professionals from the World Soundtrack Academy will also select five nominees for the Discovery of the Year. Additionally the public can also nominate their favorite score by voting for the Public Choice Award.

You can listen to the WSAwards playlist and much more on the Spotify account of Film Fest Gent. ( Every year the Advisory Board of the World Soundtrack Academy chooses a 'Discovery of the Year' to celebrate emerging film composing talent.
