  • Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) May 03, 2014 - For the second time within six months, Luis Maria R. Calingo, Ph.D, president of Woodbury University (www.woodbury.edu) has been honored by the University of the Philippines, the premier state university in the Philippines and one of Asia's leading academic institutions.

Dr. Calingo returned to his hometown of Manila to receive the 2014 "Most Outstanding Alumnus Award" from the graduate School of Urban & Regional Planning (SURP) at the University of the Philippines, and to deliver commencement addresses at the School and at the University's College of Engineering. In December, the College of Engineering - Dr. Calingo's undergraduate institution similarly bestowed "Most Outstanding Alumnus" recognition on Woodbury's president.

In his address to SURP students, Dr. Calingo spoke about risk taking, facing the uncertain future, and committing oneself to lifelong learning. "The most significant challenge that educators face today is that we are preparing our students for jobs and careers that do not yet exist, using technologies and solutions that have not yet been invented, to solve problems that society does not yet recognize as problems," he told the class, evoking former Education Secretary Richard Riley. Quoting Spanish poet Miguel de Unamuno, Dr. Calingo added, "We must try to become the parents of our future rather than the offspring of our past."

"Being honored by the University of the Philippines for a second time is a very special experience - it's deeply felt, professionally and personally," he said. "It reminds me yet again of the transformative power of quality educational institutions. At Woodbury, I'm hopeful that we are inspiring our students as the University of the Philippines shaped and inspired me."

An international expert in strategic planning and quality management, Dr. Calingo has assisted the governments of Indonesia, Mongolia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam on the establishment and implementation of their national awards for quality and business excellence, as well as the infusion of quality assurance into their higher education systems. He has served as a member of the Board of Examiners of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the country's highest award for quality and performance excellence, since 1997. Dr. Calingo's professional interests include servant leadership, strategic planning, total quality management and international business with a focus on Southeast Asia.

Calingo was installed as Woodbury's 13th president in October 2012 after serving in leadership roles at Dominican University of California; the Boler School of Business at John Carroll University, the Jesuit School of Cleveland; and the College of Business Administration at California State University, Long Beach, among others. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from the University of the Philippines, and a B.S. in industrial engineering from the University of the Philippines.
