  • (1888PressRelease) October 22, 2013 - The workshop themed 'Gaming and Gamification in tourism: opening a new experience' will address phenomenon's gamification and games and introduce best practices in the tourism industry. According to the WTM Global Trends Report 2012 many travel companies and destinations (Tourism Ireland, Australia Tourism Board) as well as hospitality businesses (Marriott, Starwood Hotels & Resorts) have already applied the concept of gaming in order to create new experiences, which are fun and engaging for customers and employees likewise. The event is open to anyone who wants to understand the concept of gaming and its impact on the tourism experience, learn how gaming can be applied in the tourism context and find out from leading experts in the field about current best practices and future opportunities of gaming for the tourism industry.

    The programme of the event comprises interesting presentations by representatives of tourism companies that have already found innovative approaches for incorporating gaming and gamification in their tourism strategies, such as Hans Petter Aalmo from Visit Noway, Roman Rackwitz from Engaginglab and Antonio Coelho from Porto University. The presentations will explore topics like 'Augmented Reality Gaming: A new Paradigm for Tourist Experience', 'Location-based games for tourism', 'Gamification and Online Engagement' and 'Using Game Design Elements for Visitor Experience Enhancement'. The workshop will conclude with an interactive panel discussion where experts are happy to answer questions relate to gamification in tourism

    Subsequently to the workshop IFITT will use this event to launch its new online education materials, which will be of great help to all members of the global e-Tourism community. These include the IFITT Wikipedia, the IFITT E-Tourism Curriculum and the IFITT Digital Library.

    The event is completely for free but people intending to attend the workshop have to register in the following way. First, they need to register for the WTM opening day event, even if they have already registered for a standard WTM admission. Secondly, they need to register for the event on Eventbrite.     The workshop is part of the World Travel Market 2013 and will take place on November 4, 2013 from 11.30 to 14:00 at the BTM Theatre in ExCel London.
