  • Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) January 15, 2013 - The NYIFF kicks off the New Year with a selection of independent features and shorts programmed as part of the LA edition of their long-running film festival. Film screenings will take place exclusively at Raleigh Studios (5300 Melrose Ave. in Hollywood. Upscale club Confidential (424 N. Beverly Drive) will host this year's red carpet opening night party on Wednesday Jan. 30th from 8-11pm.

    Festival Director Rich Rossi comments, "We are delighted to screen a selection of exciting new films for our first event of the season; genres range from a music documentary to spy thrillers and dramas and we are sure to uncover some true indie gems," said Rossi. "As always, we welcome our bright and talented filmmakers, press and industry and indie film enthusiasts to our event," continued Rossi.

    For the Love of the Music: The Club 47 Folk Revival: An exploration of the history of Club 47 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with emphasis on the years 1959-1968. The film, narrated by Peter Coyote, traces the career of Joan Baez and the evolution of the folk revival from the interpretation of traditional ballads to the singer-songwriter era. Featured are interviews with Joan Baez, Taj Mahal, Judy Collins, Tom Rush, Maria Muldaur, Geoff Muldaur, Jim Kweskin, Jackie Washington, Jim Rooney, Peter Rowan and many more. Previously unreleased audio recordings and photographs are utilized featuring Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Eric Von Schmidt. Newly filmed performances are included featuring the stars from Club 47 performing with today's emerging folk performers, as the folk process continues.

    This year's festival will include a screenplay competition; three finalists will compete for the Best Screenplay Award. The winner will have the opportunity to pitch their script to LA-based producers. The finalists are John J. Maffucci for "Forgive Not Their Trespasses," Sheila Robinson for "Fraulein" and Michael Burnside for "Barklyn."

    Stuart Alson, CEO of ITN Distribution will host panels to educate filmmakers on the fundamentals of foreign and domestic distribution on Saturday February 2nd from 2-4pm in the Chaplain building.
