  • Durham, NC (1888PressRelease) September 15, 2010 - Susan Herst has been elected President of the Parent Teacher Student Association of the Charles E. Jordan High School, Durham, NC. She will head the Assn. during the 2010-2011 school year. Herst takes over the PTSA at an exciting time for Jordan as it comes under the management of new Principal, Gregory A. Newlin.

Herst has been Treasurer of the Winnetka Community Nursery School and President of the Mary Scroggs Elementary School in Chapel Hill. She comes to the position with a goal of finding money for classroom improvements. "Raising funds during times of budget cuts to support our school was my secret objective when I accepted the position of PTSA president," says Herst. "I soon found a kindred spirit and enthusiastic partner in JHS math and computer sciences teacher, Kelly Ganci. I was delighted to hear her idea, Project Refresh Jordan, and learn of her passion for improving the academic environment in our classrooms."

Project Refresh Jordan envisions enhancing the learning environment by improving teacher's instructional tools as well as updating school and classroom facilities to foster student performance and teacher retention. The project will involve students, parents, teachers, staff and alumni in seeking grants and donations for the school. Those interested in making a tax deductible donation can make checks payable to Jordan High School Alumni Association, (note Project Refresh Jordan in the memo line) and send to C. E. Jordan High School, 6806 Garrett Rd, Durham 27707.

Charles E. Jordan High School is one of six traditional high schools in the Durham Public
School system. The mission of Jordan High School is to provide students with the opportunity to explore a body of knowledge; to develop academic, physical and social skills; and to practice thinking and decision-making processes in an open and orderly environment.
