  • Cleveland-Lorain-Elyria, OH (1888PressRelease) February 21, 2012 - In the United States alone, one in 125 newborns suffer from a congenital heart defect (CHD), making it America's number one birth defect. The Saving tiny Hearts Society (savingtinyhearts.org) is committed to funding CHD research, extending the lives of children born with a CHD today and those 50 years from now.

In appreciation for the efforts of the Saving tiny Hearts Society, Step2® Company pledged $10,000 to support CHD research in hopes of erasing this life-threatening condition forever.

"It's all about the children - we want them to grow healthy and happy," says Jerry McDermott, chief marketing officer, Step2® Holdings. "At Step2® we are a big extended family and some of our own have been affected by Congenital Heart Defects. As part of our Just Because program to reach out and do something good, we are able to touch the lives of others who want their children to be well and need attention on a cause for further research and development."

The Saving tiny Hearts Society is the beneficiary of the Step2® Creative Kitchen Christmas Promotion/Contest. In December 2011, Step2® reached out to its fans on Facebook inviting them to submit original essays on their child's creative play. Essay winners were sent a Step2® kitchen and video camera to capture their child playing creatively with their new kitchen. As each Facebook fan voted for a winner, Step2® pledged $1 until the goal of $10,000 was reached. The contest resulted in 40,000 votes and $10,000 donated to the Society.

"We're thrilled Step2 is now a member of the Saving tiny Hearts Family. This donation is funding promising CHD research in hopes of finding a cure," says Francie Paul, the Chairman and President of the Saving tiny Hearts Society. "We are eternally grateful for their continued support."
