  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) January 12, 2011 - 5 Easy Dog Training Tips for a well behaved dog

    1. Play with your dog daily. Never underestimate the power of play. Play is a great energy burner, stress reliever, and is downright fun. Most importantly, it will build the bond between you and make your dog think you are the most exciting thing in his world. Instead of sending your dog to play with his buddies at the dog park, play with him yourself! Fetch, hide and seek, and trick training are all great ways to spend quality bonding time together, and keep your dog out of trouble.

    2. Be a Social Butterfly. If you are raising a new puppy take him with you everywhere you go. The more experiences your puppy has early in life the less likely he will react or spook as an adult dog. Take him to your friends' houses, the bank, the park, Yappy Hours, etc. Let your puppy meet lots of babies, children, adults and other dogs of all sizes in different locations. Let people feed your dog tasty treats to help him enjoy meeting them even more. If you want your adult dog to act like a jaded New Yorker and not bark and lunge at everything in sight, you've got to get him out in the world early and often!

    3. Make your dog a Super Sitter. Teach your dog the way to get everything he wants in life is to sit. Ask him to sit for his meals and dog biscuits. Before you throw a ball for him, ask him to sit. Take him for walks and when you stop walking ask him to sit and reward him for it. Most importantly, teach him that the only way to meet people and get human attention is to have his butt planted firmly on the ground. With this one command, you can have the most mannerly dog on your block!

    4. Reward Your Dog for Good Behavior. The squeaky wheel gets the oil and the same hold true with dogs and children. Negative attention is still attention, so instead of yelling at your dog for bad behavior, notice your dog when he is good. This means all the things he is not doing like not barking, jumping or scratching. When Sparky is sitting calmly, praise him and give him a belly rub. When he is playing with his toy instead of your underwear, praise him and play with him. If you let your dog know what behavior you like and reward him for doing it you will get more of it!

    5. Give Your Dog a Job to do or he will invent his Own. Unfortunately most dog's idea of a fun job is excavating the garbage or re landscaping your backyard. Instead, provide him with an acceptable job that will occupy him when you cannot. Hollow chew toys that can be stuffed with delicious doggie delicacies such as Kong Toys are a great "work for food" toy to provide your dog a suitable job. Treat balls that the dog must move around in hopes of a reward being extracted is also a great way to provide mental stimulation and burn excess energy. Make sure you fill toys with something your dog finds irresistible so he will be motivated to work for it!

Also in honor of Train Your Dog Month Lisa is offering ten percent off all dog training packages and "Stay-N-Train programs booked in the month of January.
