  • (1888PressRelease) May 12, 2016 - Source Molecular Corporation joined the 2016 Recreational Waters Conference hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Science and Technology from April 12 to 15, at the JW Marriott in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Mauricio Larenas of Source Molecular presented a poster entitled, "National View of Water Quality Outcomes Achieved Using EPA's Patented MST Technology." Source Molecular has a license from the EPA to use their patented MST tests for Human, Cattle, Chicken and Dog fecal pollution.

The conference also tackled beach monitoring, beach notification and implementation tools for the 2012 Recreational Water Quality Criteria.

The conference was attended by representatives from state, local and tribal governments responsible for monitoring recreational waters for fecal indicator bacteria, researchers working on ambient water fecal pollution issues, and government officials and non-governmental organizations interested in state/tribal adoption of the 2012 Recreational Water Quality Criteria.

The EPA's 2012 Recreational Water Quality Criteria (RWQC) recognizes that molecular source tracking tools may be useful in managing recreational waters to better protect public health. Specifically, the EPA noted that "molecular source tracking tools may also be useful in verifying the results of sanitary surveys by confirming the presumed sources of fecal contamination in the watershed." The EPA also acknowledged that "information such as molecular source tracking may be needed to effectively delineate sources within the watershed."

Source Molecular's laboratory has the ability to test for 13 sources - Human, Cattle, Swine, Gull, Goose, Chicken, Dog, Deer, Elk, Horse, Bird, Beaver and Ruminant. With its commercial MST testing services, Source Molecular has assisted clients in projects with recreational water quality monitoring, Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) development and implementation, and stormwater management.
