Science Writers at Connect With Art in Seminar Series

  • (1888PressRelease) July 23, 2010 - Science and the arts have always had much to say to one another. Music has its roots in mathematical relationships. Perspective and color perception are based on the biological functioning of the eye. However, these days, it is possible for a scientist to go through the higher education system with no exposure to the arts at all. To overcome this artificial (and very recent) separation of scientists from the arts, is putting on a seminar series in aesthetics.

Our lecturers will avoid possibly dreary lists of artists, composers, choreographers, styles and movements. Instead, this mini-course will draw connections between the arts and the science which underpins them. By showing how science informs the arts, we hope to convince the science specialists that the arts can inform the sciences.

For example, we will learn about the color wheel and the way the retina responds to colors. We will also learn how a vibrating column of air or a string creates musical tones. Our lecturers will also introduce the terminology to describe works of art, and our responses to them.

By seminar's end, we hope to convince our scientists of the worth of the arts and the beauty that they can bring into our lives. This is a broadening and deepening message for all of us on staff, not just the science writers. As with other initiatives to increase the breadth of experience of our writers, this is hoped to impact their writing positively

The most iconic scientist of the last century wrote, wrote in The World as I See It that, "The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious-the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science." There was clearly, for him, no separation between the arts and the sciences.

Here at, we have a whole staff of professional writers to help you make the correct connections between one idea and another. After several years in this market, can help with almost any document.
