Rosatom will sign agreement with Jordan

  • (1888PressRelease) March 24, 2015 - Under the agreement, Rosatom will commit to provide nuclear fuel for the first 10 years for the reactor to operate starting in 2022, Toukan said at a press conference in Amman. Jordan can also return nuclear fuel waste to Russia. The project needs final government approval.

    As reported earlier, in September 2014, Rosatom signed a pre-investment contract on NPP construction with Jordan.

    The document implies contracting works, in particular, water-cooling systems development, energy market analysis, site evaluation and preparation of the Environmental impact assessment (EIA).

    The Russian side planned to conclude an intergovernmental agreement with Jordan and the project contract before the end of last summer, reported in June Djomartov Aliyev, CEO structure Rosatom - JSC "Rusatom Overseas".

    He noted that the scheme implemented in Jordan is a distributed contracting one, so two agreements are to be signed: Intergovernmental Agreement and Project Development Agreement, in which within 1.5-2 years "Rusatom Overseas" will be engaged in engineering surveys and the project development itself.

    Leos Tomíček, Vice President of "Rusatom Overseas" also reported that it is considering merging "Rusatom Overseas" and the Jordanian company - construction project owner. A similar model was developed in Finland.

    As reported, Russia won the tender for the NPP construction in Jordan in November 2013. The plant will consist of two units of 1000 MW each.

    The Construction Agreement is expected to be signed in 2016. Rosatom will finance 49.9 percent of the project, including two plants with capacity to generate 2,000 megawatts of power. Jordan will own the rest..
