  • (1888PressRelease) February 18, 2011 - Ottawa, Ontario, Canada - Roaring Penguin Software Inc. increases the effectiveness of its "Outbound Rate Limiting" feature by allowing rate limiting based upon the sending IP Address. This is in addition to rate limiting outbound mail based upon the sender's e-mail address. CanIt can automatically block senders who send too many messages per hour. This allows system administrators to protect the reputation of their networks from compromised computers spewing spam. When a sender's outbound e-mail volume exceeds the hourly rate limit, the sender is stopped from sending any more e-mail and notifications are automatically sent to the e-mail administrator.

This new outbound spam filtering feature allows ISPs to quickly detect and block compromised customer machines that send spam while varying the sender address.

CanIt's IP-based rate-limiting even works for hosts that relay through a central mail server forwarding mail out through the CanIt server. CanIt can pick out the real client IP addresses from the stream of outgoing e-mail and block only the offenders while allowing unrelated machines to continue to relay. As with all other CanIt features, the IP-based rate-limiting feature is IPv6-capable.
