  • Salem, OR (1888PressRelease) June 17, 2015 - Andy Blevins, Development Director at the American Military Partner Association, has been selected as an Honored Member of the National Association of Distinguished Professionals.

Beginning his career in LGBT military advocacy while still serving in the US Navy under the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" military law, Andy Blevins was a Cryptologic Technician Petty Officer Second Class at the time, stationed onboard the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station in Guam. Joining several other LGBT service members and veterans in an organization known as OutServe, which is the world's largest resource for actively serving LGBT service members, Mr. Blevins served as the regional director for Guam and the Marianas Islands before co-directing the organization's 2012 'Our Families Matter' Congressional Summit and the 2012 International Military Leadership Conference.

Now the Development Director at the American Military Partner Association, Mr. Blevins specializes in providing education, advocacy, and support to LGBT military families. He also advises his organization's president on a number of issues and is responsible for building and executing the development plan that will grow and diversify the organization's funder base.

Forced to hide his own identity from friends, peers, subordinates, and superiors as a gay man during his years in the military, Mr. Blevins lived in fear, unable to form many substantial connections with those he worked with without the possibility of losing his career. Inspired to advocate for the rights of the underrepresented minorities within the military community years later, Mr. Blevins feels incredibly blessed to be able to serve others who experienced much of what he felt while serving.

Mr. Blevins holds a BA in English Writing with Honors from the University of Colorado at Denver. He will be attending Willamette University's College of Law this fall. He plans on applying to their joint JD/MBA program and looks forward to working as a commercial lawyer in the future.

Mr. Blevins is an ordained minister/wedding officiant through the Universal Life Church Monastery, worked as a fellow at Junior Achievement through the Mission Continues fellowship program, and served in a coveted internship with the Office of the First Lady through the White House Internship Program. He previously served as vice-president of the Military Partners and Families Coalition and was proud to contribute his story through a chapter in 'Our Time: Breaking the Silence of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", a book published after the law's repeal in 2011. He has earned numerous awards and accolades during his time served in the US Navy, including being named the 2010 NCTSGU Command Sailor of the Year, a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Navy Good Conduct Medal. He was previously named the 2012 LGBT New Group Leader of the Year in the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network's "Out in the Silence" Program, and most recently received the 2014-15 Dean's Outstanding Student Leadership Award in recognition of his spirit of service at the University of Colorado at Denver.
