LTE pilot project in seven tourist regions starting today

  • (1888PressRelease) December 09, 2011 - LTE is available as part of a pilot project running in seven Swiss tourist areas. For this service, users require an LTE-enabled USB modem and the relevant subscriptions.

    Customers who are interested can now participate in the Swisscom LTE pilot project and experience the benefits of this new technology first hand. For this service, users require an appropriate USB modem and corresponding subscription. The seven-day offer costs CHF 19 and is aimed at holidaymakers, for example, who want to try out LTE. Customers who want to use LTE for longer are advised to opt for the monthly offer for CHF 60. Both offers include unlimited data volumes for mobile surfing at the LTE sites. Customers will require a Windows PC with XP, Vista or Win7 operating system.

    Available in seven locations and 11 Swisscom Shops
    The following Swiss tourist areas are equipped with LTE for the pilot project: Davos, Grindelwald, Gstaad, Leukerbad, Montana, Saas Fee and St. Moritz/Celerina. The USB modem and the SIM card can be purchased in Davos and St. Moritz in the Swisscom Shop, and at the other locations from the local tourist offices. From 31 January 2012, 11 Swisscom Shops will be equipped with LTE in the larger towns and cities in Switzerland, and at these locations interested customers will have the opportunity to try LTE for free.

    LTE pilot project scheduled to run up to mid-2012
    LTE is the successor to UMTS/HSPA and belongs to the fourth generation of mobile communications. The pilot project is scheduled to run from the start of December 2011 until mid-2012. Swisscom intends to test the LTE network under real conditions and gather experience in order to be able to best deploy LTE in Switzerland.
