  • Tuscaloosa, AL (1888PressRelease) July 08, 2016 - Honoring the 75 Anniversary of the Tuskegee Airmen Experience - Legacy Flight Academy (LFA) founder, Major Kenyatta (Keny) Ruffin, had dreams of being a pilot as young as five years old. Because of the opportunities to fly as a youth, he realized his dreams, even flying a plane by the age of 13.

Today, Major Ruffin is a United States Air Force fighter pilot and flight instructor with the 469th Flying Training Squadron at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, and is opening doors in aviation for the next generation. With support from the National Park Service, Golden Eagle Aviation, the Air National Guard, and CAF Red Tail Squadron, Legacy Flight Academy is hosting two Open House events, Thursday, July 14 and Saturday, July 16. The events are free and open to the public.

Major Ruffin was recently awarded the BET Shine A Light Award for the academy's programs that raise awareness among young people to the benefits and opportunities a military, aeronautics or aviation career can afford them. "I enjoy every minute I get to work with the young people who participate in our academy programs," say Major Ruffin. "I'm also proud to work and serve with the professionals, teachers, adult mentors, and the flight and ground instructors who are genuinely invested in the success of our students."

Both open houses will showcase the exciting and heroic exploits of the Tuskegee Airmen and bring the thrill of flight to visitors of all ages. Students who dream of flying or desire to explore the many career opportunities in aviation and aeronautics are encouraged to come out and have some fun. They will also learn about next year's programs.
