  • (1888PressRelease) October 08, 2011 - "The HR Executive of the Year award recognizes human resource leaders who have made outstanding contributions to their organizations and who exemplify the increasingly strategic role of HR in business today," said David Shadovitz, editor of Human Resource Executive®.

Since joining Harris in 2005, Shuman has been instrumental in creating and overseeing a number of important initiatives designed to solidify greater alignment between the HR function and Harris' bottom line. These include creating an integrated talent-management system that includes an organizational development and effectiveness capability to assess company talent, and the expansion of offerings at the company's online learning center. He also has played a key role in helping Harris seek out and leverage new business opportunities.

"Jeff has expanded the HR function beyond its traditional boundaries and exemplifies our company’s commitment to finding new and innovative solutions to organizational challenges throughout the enterprise," said Howard L. Lance, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Harris. "He is a valued strategic advisor to our management team, members of the executive committee and our board of directors." "I am very proud to be selected for this honor," said Shuman. "I realize this award is presented to an individual, but it truly reflects success achieved through teamwork, and I am particularly fortunate to be surrounded by very dedicated and talented people who help to take the idea of HR as a strategic function and make it reality."

The prestigious award is presented to just one individual each year, following a review by a panel of distinguished judges who base their selections on the candidate’s ability to handle significant problems or obstacles in the HR field, the candidate’s role and/or success in establishing the HR function as an integral part of his or her organization, the candidate’s management skills, and his or her contributions to the HR profession as a whole. Other recipients in recent years have included HR executives from Google, Cigna, IBM and Humana.

In addition to human resources and corporate relations, Shuman has oversight for Government Relations; Real Estate; Environmental, Health, and Safety; Public Relations; Flight Operations; and Business Conduct. Before joining Harris, Shuman was vice president of Human Resources and Administration for Northrop Grumman's Information Technology business, and senior vice president of Human Resources for Litton Information Systems Group, which was acquired by Northrop Grumman in 2001. Previously, he was vice president of Human Resources for AlliedSignal's technical service business. Prior to that, he spent 14 years in Operations and Human Resources with Avon Products.

Shuman has a bachelor's degree in psychology from The Citadel. Following graduation, he served as a Medical Service Corps officer in the U.S. Army. He completed executive development programs in business and human resources at the University of Michigan, Harvard Business School, Center for Creative Leadership, University of Virginia's Darden School of Business, University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Business School and Cornell University. He also participated in a U.S. Executive Exchange Program with the People's Republic of China.

He also serves on the Advisory Board for the University of Southern California Center for Effective Organizations in the Marshall Business School. He received a Stevie® during the American Business Awards in 2007 for Best Human Resources Executive.
