    IoT Asia 2014 was officially opened by Mr Teo Ser Luck, Minister of State, Ministry of Trade & Industry, Singapore. In his address , Mr Teo mentioned that internet of things is important to Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to create new markets for new products, as well as to serve as an enabler for productivity improvements. He added that the Singapore government is committed towards driving the adoption of IoT in SMEs by allocating $500 million for a 3-year ICT for Productivity & Growth Programme as announced in the 2014 Singapore Budget.

    The internet of things is a new class of technology and has immense potential to transform the way we live our lives, be it at a community, city or country level. The rise of such technology presents a myriad of new opportunities across multiple business sectors. As such, IoT Asia 2014 was conceptualised with the main objective to help identify the needs in the IoT industry in Asia and augment the adoption and adaptation of this growing technology in the region to improve business operations and the lives of people.

    Echoing his comments is Oliver Tian, President of Singapore Industrial Automation Association (SIAA), co-organiser of IoT Asia 2014, "The event featured a comprehensive conference programme with an excellent array of exhibits and a great turnout. This is an excellent platform for accelerating the awareness and plans for adoption of IoT solutions. We are very encouraged by the very positive feedback and turnout, and next year's event promises to be even more alluring".

    The exhibition featured over 40 exhibitors from 11 countries, and this includes companies such as Cisco, StarHub, SAP, Intel, Bosch and A*Star.

    New technologies and products were showcased at the event including SAP We Care, a healthcare concept application using wearable glasses which allows doctors and medical staff real time access to Electronic Medical Records (EMR). Bosch's Urbanville, a city platform which assists to improve mobility, security and quality of life, better integrating citizens with the cities they live in was also featured at the exhibition. Local exhibitors include HutCabb Consulting, Apps-Connect and Advantech.

    Says Juha Lindfors, Co-Founder of OpenRemote from USA who exhibited at the event, "We are very happy with the high quality of event organisation, the level of interest participants have for IoT, and the presence of many local and international visitors. It has convinced us that Singapore will become an important hub for the technology development around IoT."

    One of the key highlights of the event is the keynote address on smart cities focusing on the city of Santander by His Excellency Inigo De La Serna Hernaiz, Mayor of Santander, Spain. Amongst the topics discussed include deploying large-scale city-wide IoT solutions, project scoping and phases of development, and the rewards and ongoing challenges in managing these projects with the conference delegates.
