  • Houston, TX (1888PressRelease) February 04, 2011 - Bright Sky Press announced the arrival of Historic Houston Streets: The Stories Behind the Names (Bright Sky Press, March 2011) on Tuesday, February 1, 2011. The new book expands on the original, published under the same name by Archival Press in 2006, to include the city's surrounding counties.

Historic Houston Streets is the only book ever published on the history of local streets. Author and historian Marks Hinton delves into the history of The Bayou City and its nearby towns in this updated version, creating a thorough chronicle of the heroes, humor and heritage inscribed on our street signs.

"Houston area streets have always been an unending source of fascination for me," says Hinton. "No one in the 174 years since Houston was founded had produced such a book, and I wanted to give not only Houston, but dozens of cities, towns and rural areas in Brazoria, Galveston, Montgomery, Fort Bend, Waller, Harris and Liberty a piece of their past."

The book includes topical sections that highlight Houston street-naming trends, like streets named for World War I soldiers and the British legacy in the Neartown area, where street names have a smacking of Anglophilia. Historic photographs, maps and portraits enliven the information, allowing readers to marvel at how the city has evolved.

Marks Hinton is a native Houstonian and graduate of Southern Methodist University. He started researching this topic to fill a void in the Texas Room of the Houston Public Library, but the finished product Historic Houston Streets developed out of his personal passion for urban history. Marks has led tours for the Orange Show Foundation's award-winning Eyeopener Tours for the past 16 years, and he is also a freelance writer.
