  • (1888PressRelease) November 14, 2011 - DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, today announced submissions are being accepted for its 2012 Fedora Scholarship program to acknowledge college students across the globe for their contributions to free software and the Fedora Project, a Red Hat-sponsored and community-supported open source collaboration.

The Fedora Scholarship is awarded to one student each year to assist with the recipient's college or university education. Now entering its fifth year, the Fedora Scholarship reflects the Fedora Project's efforts to inspire college students to use and contribute to open source software.

"The Fedora Scholarship recognizes young talent in the pursuit of innovation. We hope to encourage and foster future technologists to openly develop and contribute technology," said Jared Smith, employee and Fedora Project Leader at Red Hat. "The four previous Fedora Scholarship recipients are extremely active in open source communities while working toward their degrees. We believe that open source is the right way for technology to be developed because the best ideas win, and we are excited for the ideas our next-generation technologists are sure to bring."

The Fedora Scholarship program furthers Red Hat and the Fedora Project's commitment to help develop and foster emerging talent in the field of open source software. Applicants will be evaluated on criteria including the quality of contributions made to Fedora and other free software projects, references provided by Fedora community members, the amount of time the applicant has been contributing to Fedora and other free software projects, and the overall caliber of the application. Recipients will receive $2,000 USD annually for each of up to four years they attend a college or university. In addition, funding for travel expenses will be provided during each scholarship year for attendance to a Fedora Users and Developers Conference (FUDCon) in the recipient's region.

The 2012 application window is now open and will close February 24, 2012. For more information on the Fedora Scholarship or to apply, visit http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Scholarship. For more information about the Fedora Project, visit www.fedoraproject.org.
