  • (1888PressRelease) February 18, 2013 - Douglas A. Melton will give a keynote presentation on "How To Make Pancreatic Beta Cells" at the Stem Cell Summit 2013 (Apr 29-30, 2013 in Boston MA).

Dr. Melton's presentation will focus on the research of making human pancreatic beta cells to study and treat diabetes. This goal is pursued with two main approaches: directing the differentiation of stem cells into beta cells and studying the signals that replicate pre-existing beta cells. The signals that direct stem and progenitor cells toward a mature beta cell phenotype will be described as well as work on a secreted protein, betatrophin, that induces beta cell replication.

Dr. Melton is the Xander University Professor at Harvard University and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Melton serves as the co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, co-chairs the Harvard University Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology and serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Genetics Policy Institute. He holds membership in the National Academy of the Sciences, and is a founding member of the International Society for Stem Cell Research. Melton's early work in the 1980s pioneered the technique of in vitro transcription. His current research interests include pancreatic developmental biology and the directed differentiation of human embryonic stem cells, particularly in pertinence to type 1 diabetes.

Douglas A. Melton will join over 45 experts from the industry, academia and government at the Stem Cell Summit 2013 to discuss recent developments in stem cell research. Experts will discuss pre-clinical and clinical trials of stem cell therapy, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, cancer stem cells, stem cell reprogramming, new paradigms for drug discovery/cell therapy and regulatory policies. Experts will also discuss other important stem cell issues such business opportunities, challenges in commercialization and the potential strategies for overcoming these challenges.
