  • (1888PressRelease) July 15, 2011 - Up to now many jewellers using software to design their pieces have not been able to benefit from their 64 bit computers as their software was unable to harness such technology. With ArtCAM's 64 bit version, jewellers using a 64 bit operating system such as Windows can now increase the speed at which they work as well as work with larger, more memory intensive files.

Grant Bailey from Artifacturing uses the software, "I feel like it's bringing my hardware resources to bear. Calculations appear much faster and it loaded a 250mb file in 3 seconds!"

As a fully integrated CADCAM package, jewellers do not need to worry about inconsistencies between the design and its machining, which can occur when working with separate packages or "plug-ins", nor do they need prior knowledge of CAD /CAM.

Designed to give the user complete freedom, the jeweller can save their preferred software layout and begin creating their jewellery, be that a pendant, broach or ring either directly in ArtCAM or by importing 2D artwork or pre-created/ bought 3D models into ArtCAM.

ArtCAM also provides a library of relief clipart that can be added to any piece of jewellery. If the design requires more than one piece of artwork, these can all be opened simultaneously, resized and repositioned as required prior to committing to the design. Once the layout has been established they can then be embossed or sculpted, for example from an array of design tools. To help the design process, the jeweller can create several layers, which can be turned on and off, so that designs can easily be altered or copied.

What's more, for complex pieces of jewellery, ArtCAM provides a project tree, which not only keeps all models and their corresponding layers together, but enables the jeweller to see how the jewellery will look with the compiled models and alter them or how they interact with one another.

Creating rings such as Three Stone, Cluster or Eternity is also easily achieved with ArtCAM JewelSmith's extended and enhanced library of shanks and gems. For band rings, the jeweller can design on an unwrapped layout of the band and switch between an unwrapped and ring view as necessary. Alternatively they can sculpt directly onto the ring. The relief clipart library also holds many textured band ring designs. Once the jeweller is happy with the ring, this can be added to ArtCAM's component library, which can be accessed at any time and resized if required.

To help with the design or approval stages, ArtCAM can render the look of a variety of materials, such as white gold and calculate the weight of the jewellery in that material, particularly useful when pricing your pieces.

Once happy with the design, the customer can be shown a dynamically rotating image of their jewellery which enables them to view the piece from all angles. Furthermore this can be provided as a 3D rotatable PDF. Once authorised, one of ArtCAM's powerful machining strategies can be sent to calculate the toolpaths required for machining. Prior to send toolpaths to the machine, the jeweller can check the accuracy of their machined project or model, saving both time and money.
