  • (1888PressRelease) May 05, 2012 - Since 2006, Oliver Bousquet has been using PowerMILL, PowerSHAPE and ArtCAM for his work at the Dynamic Meteorology Laboratory (LMD) of CNRS.

Created 40 years ago, this laboratory is dedicated to dynamic meteorology. Recently the LMD has focused on investigations into global climate change, in particular, methods for analysing the atmosphere. It developed the Meteosat concept of geostationary satellites to provide continuous and reliable meteorological observations from space. Another project involving the engineering and manufacturing department in which Mr. Bousquet works was the Megatropique Project, the creation of a radiometer to be able to obtain radioactivity results.

For the "Meilleur Ouvrier de France” contest, Mr. Bousquet created a part based around the shape of a rugby ball. It is made of fourteen parts on four aluminium supporting branches. The support itself is created from twelve interchangeable parts. The whole structure is crossed by an axis around which the two-part hexagonal core can turn. It weighs 40 kg, and is 500mm high, 370mm long and 370mm wide.

The manufacture of the parts was divided between a Mikron milling machine, programmed with PowerMILL, and a conventional lathe programmed manually on the machine.

Mr. Bousquet has found many benefits from working with Delcam software, not least the close integration of PowerSHAPE and PowerMILL. He felt that Delcam was always ahead of its competitors in developing new techniques and strategies within PowerMILL. Recent enhancements that he has found particularly useful included the incorporation of the tool database, the trochoidal and Race Line strategies for high-speed machining, and the ability to use point distribution to give smoother machining.
