  • Durham, NC (1888PressRelease) May 18, 2014 - Tomoko Maeda-Chubachi, Medical Director at Stiefel, a Dermatology Division of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), has been selected as a Professional of the Year Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Tomoko Maeda-Chubachi's commitment to excellence in Pharmaceuticals.

Tomoko Maeda-Chubachi, who holds an MD from Osaka University, followed by a PhD in Medical Biology, also from Osaka University, and an MBA in Global Management from the University of Phoenix, Magna Cum Laude, began her career as an academic physician and dermatologist for ten years before joining the pharmaceutical industry in 2002. Starting out working for Pfizer in her native country of Japan for five years, the company sent her to the US in 2006 to play a more central role in the global drug development. Moving to Eli Lilly and Company in 2011, Dr. Maeda-Chubachi recently joined Stiefel, a dermatology division of GSK, in March 2014.

"I believe this is a very exciting opportunity for me as I am a dermatologist by training and I have wanted to contribute more to the dermatology community for a long time," Dr. Maeda-Chubachi said about her new role as medical director. "I think dermatology is the underserved area in terms of new drug development."

In her current role, Dr. Maeda-Chubachi is responsible for developing new drugs in dermatology, strategy development, protocol development, negotiation with the regulatory agencies like the FDA, running clinical trials, and filling the new drug application to the regulatory authorities in the US, Europe, Japan, and other countries.

Consciously working to improve her leadership skills as the drug development team consists of representatives from many different lines and countries, Dr. Maeda-Chubachi's main goal is in helping patients with various skin diseases live happier with new medications and new technologies. She is grateful that she can involve such an exciting area by leading a large project team and hopes to see young physicians understand what an interesting and exciting career path this is.

Dr. Maeda-Chubachi hope to serve as a liaison in the future to facilitate collaboration between academia and the industry, make new research and medication reach the patients in need, and mentor physicians interested in working in the field.

Dr. Maeda-Chubachi is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, Society for Investigative Dermatology, Japanese Dermatology Association, and Healthcare Businesswomen's Association. One of her biggest achievements included execution of a challenging pediatric glaucoma study including newborn babies and filing the indication to EU in 2010 with her team at Pfizer, bringing a six-month patent extension of the glaucoma drug, Xalatan, one of the well- recognized drugs in ophthalmology. Soon after, she was recognized as an effective clinical leader, which led to the assignment of a dermatology project that she had longed for. Since then, she has focused on drug development dermatology, mainly in psoriasis. At Stiefel, she is excited to broaden her area of contributions to other dermatological diseases.
