  • Knoxville, TN (1888PressRelease) August 30, 2013 - Certified Teacher Assistant Sherry Talisa Carr began her career in education as a substitute teacher with Jefferson County in 1980 as a substitute teacher. By the end of the year, she was hired as a teacher's assistant in the special education department. Three years later, at the age of twenty-one, she also became a certified bus driver, driving for the county.

Currently working under the Exceptional Children Services at the High School, Ms. Carr is in an inclusion biology classroom helping to monitor and work with students' individual needs by aiding a regular education teacher. She has also worked in a special educational classroom during first period, singing to students as a way to help them grasp certain concepts.

Having suffered mild brain damage as a child, Ms. Carr remembers how much she enjoyed piano lessons, playing various other instruments, being in a band, and singing in a choir to keep her muscles from not getting tight. She is inspired everyday in the classroom by her mom, who was a big supporter of her early years growing up.

"We serve under many hats," Ms. Carr said about the importance of her teacher assistant position. "What needs to be done, we do. It takes the whole department to do this job, not just one person. We have to work as a team."

Ms. Carr is in the process of producing a CD that contains all her teaching songs for use in teaching other children with disabilities. She hopes to earn her special education degree in the near future and hopefully have her own class very soon.

Ms. Carr is part of the South Jefferson Little League Challenger Baseball Team as a coach. She's been awarded with the title of Outstanding Transportation Employee for 2002-2003 and was recently earned a Teacher's Assistant Award from Jefferson County School in 2013. She is a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church in Newport where she serves as ministry of music and also drives the church bus voluntarily.
