  • Parkersburg-Marietta, WV-OH (1888PressRelease) October 21, 2015 - Maryanne Gallo Courtney, Retired Educator, has been selected as a Featured Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry.

Graduating from Ohio University in 1982, Maryanne Gallo Courtney immediately began working at Wirt County High School as their first certified Learning Disability Teacher. Spending 17 years in that role, teaching learning disability, behavioral disability, and mentally impaired students in grades preschool through 12, she then spent the next 16 years of her career teaching third grade students in a regular classroom setting. Retiring in June 2015, Mrs. Courtney plans to substitute teach in the 2015/2016 academic school year.

Responsible for determining the strengths and weaknesses of her students and their teaching preferences and making sure that her students were able to master the life and academic skills at their grade level, Mrs. Courtney also helped them to understand how they learned best so that they could continue to grow outside of their school environment.

"As a substitute teacher, I hope to continue mentoring new teachers within the county," Mrs. Courtney said, who was also inspired by great mentors and teachers throughout her career. "I also want to be able to share the resources I have gathered with other teachers in my school district."

Mrs. Courtney holds a BSEd in Special Education from Ohio University since 1982 and an MAEd in Special Education from West Virginia University since 1986. She completed her regular education certification requirements at Ohio Valley University in 1999. A member several professional organizations, including National Reading Association West, West Virginia Readers Association, and West Virginia Professional Educators, she also attended the National Junior Achievement Conference at Indiana University and is the recipient of a 1978 Junior Achievement Secretary of the Year Award for Cleveland.
