  • Boston, MA-NH (1888PressRelease) November 14, 2012 - Kathryn Berry Poulin, Special Needs Educator at Apponequet Regional High School, has been selected as a VIP Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Kathryn Berry Poulin's commitment to excellence in Education.

Poulin, who holds a Bachelor's Degree in Art Education from Notre Dame College, followed by a Master's of Education Degree in Occupational Education from Fitchburg State University, began teaching for a local private school as a behavior specialist running an alternative program for at-risk students. She transitioned into public education as a high school alternative behavioral program teacher that serviced at-risk general education and special education populations. From there, she went on to teach first and third year visual art part-time, run two academic support classes, while also co-teaching World History with a regular education teacher. Last year, she co-supported three biology classes with a new teacher and ran three academic support classes.

Now a full-time academic support special needs teacher, Poulin has her hands full localizing incoming individual education plans for students entering the school on IEPs, runs contact caseloads for those receiving special education services, writes yearly student IEPs, observes students in their class habitats, collects data from classroom teachers, writes quarterly progress reports, plus a host of other responsibilities. Poulin has mentored new high school teachers for over ten years; this year being the first year that she is mentoring a fellow special educator.

Crediting her high school art teacher, computers, and the internet for inspiring Poulin to reach out and be inclusive and have a voice beyond her classroom, she decided to be a special needs teacher to lend a voice in helping her students be heard, valued, and respected.

Poulin is also an extracurricular advisor to a Diversity Coalition GSA club that fund raises for international charities, school community anti-bullying, and suicide prevention programs, and to promote a safe, tolerant, and unbiased environment for gay-straight students.

"Influence can save lives," Poulin said. "I don't take my teacher-student responsibilities lightly."

Poulin hopes to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree in illustration, or work on a PhD in at-risk student populations, to finish her illustrations to publish her children's book, and to ultimately become a published writer of short stories, fiction, and non-fiction. She's participated in two National Endowment for the Humanities summer teacher institutes and is also a current member of National Association of Special Education Teachers and Massachusetts Teachers Association.
