  • Sacramento, CA (1888PressRelease) September 18, 2013 - Strongly influenced by his father who opened the first soccer school in the US in 1967, Joseph Mihaljevic born in 1960 in St. Louis, Missouri and began going to his father's soccer school in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of eight. They traveled to international tournaments in Canada and Holland, and by the age of fourteen had never lost an international game. He won the Missouri/Illinois State Cup three times with his club team before heading to Belgrade, Yugoslavia for a year, his father's home country, to play with two first division teams Red Star and OFK Beograd. When Mr. Mihaljevic returned to the US he became a first team All-American at Meramec Community College, receiving a full scholarship to Hartwick College in New York. In that same year he played for the Silver team at the Olympic Sports Festival in 1981 and won the US Amateur Cup 2-1 with Anheuser-Busch against Philadelphia Bayern 2-1 scoring the winning goal. He was then drafted in the second round as a senior for the Pittsburgh Spirit of the MISL.

Now with an International Coaching License from first Division Italian Club Fiorentina, Mr. Mihaljevic followed in the footsteps of his father by opening his own soccer school in 2003. He is currently running classes with the city of Folsom for pre-kindergarten-kindergarten aged children, doing 50-60 exercises to make new connections between the brain, nervous system, and musco-skeletal system, and does a chess and soccer class for homeschoolers. He also has his own Mihaljevic Soccer School classes on Fridays and trains juvenile detention center inmates three times per week in Sacramento.

Mr. Mihaljevic feels that training young children is the best and most productive way he can give back to society, developing strong character and life skill traits for high risk children as well as mainstream children. In this way, he can contribute most beneficially to the future and our children's future.

"I wish to continue training children of all ages, developing them technically as well as by instilling productive principles and values through the game of soccer," Mr. Mihaljevic said. "I'd like to also create a manual for the Juvenile Detention Center of Sacramento to define and develop all of the elements of character through exercises and small sided games so they can go on and live the most productive lives possible."

Mr. Mihaljevic learned a lot from his father, who was trained under Hennes Weisweiller, polled to be the second best coach of the last century behind Rinus Michels of Holland. Mr. Mihaljevic trained under his father until the age of eighteen and also played for Jim Lennox of Hartwick College, a USSF Staff coach, and for Carlos Alberto, a World Cup captain for Brazil in 1970. He earned numerous accolades for soccer, including holding a goal scoring record of scoring five goals in 25 minutes in a professional soccer game with the Miami Sharks against the Washington Diplomats in a 5-1 win in the ASL in 1987, being the leading goal scorer in the US Soccer History for 1987 for the San Jose Earthquakes, and was US Open winner and MVP in 1992 for the San Jose Oaks. In his first year of coaching, he coached the Folsom High School freshman team and the team went undefeated, 17-0.
