  • Lansing-East Lansing, MI (1888PressRelease) March 09, 2013 - Heather S. Ellenwood, Music Educator at Byron Community Schools, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Heather S. Ellenwood's commitment to excellence in Music Education.

Ellenwood, who holds a BA in Music Education from Michigan State University and an MA in Instrumental Music Education from Vandercook College of Music, is currently pursuing a second master's degree in Music Technology from Valley Forge Christian College. She also hold a Level I certification in the Gordon Music Learning Theory.

When she first placed her fingertips on the piano at age five, Ellenwood discovered her passion for music. She played numerous instruments and participated in multiple ensembles during her elementary, middle school, and high school years. After graduating high school she went on to study music education. During college, she remained an active performer, performing with the prestigious ensemble at Michigan State and with multiple community ensembles. She also taught private trumpet lessons within the greater community and early childhood music at the community music school.

After earning her bachelor's degree, Ellenwood began teaching K-8 general music and beginning band in Pontiac, Michigan. Wanting to focus more on instrumental music, in the fall of 2004 Ellenwood took the position of Director of Bands at Merrill Community Schools. While in Merrill, she taught K-5th grade general music, 5-12th grade concert band, marching band, pep band, and jazz band. Under her guidance, the high school band grew considerably, 8th grade band size doubled, and participation in 6th and 7th grade band blossomed. She was able to increase high school and middle school participation in MSBOA Solo & Ensemble, establish a jazz band, a 5th grade beginning band, a color guard, and revived the Music Boosters organization. In 2006, the Merrill High School Band received a Division I rating at district festival. This had not been accomplished in Merrill for twenty-six years. Many first-division ratings have since been received. Additionally, the Merrill's middle school band received their first-ever division I rating during the 2009-2010 school year.

"I strive to share my passion and enthusiasm for music with my students on a daily basis," Ellenwood said. "I want music to become a part of their lives, not just a class, but an experience. During my years at Merrill I worked hard to build the program and to bring it to a new level."

Although it was very difficult, Ellenwood left Merrill in the fall of 2011 to complete a second Master's degree in music technology. She currently teaches K-5th grade general music at Byron Community Schools. One of her greatest strengths is improving musicianship among younger students and fostering their natural love for music, giving them a solid foundation on which to start middle school band. Her true passion lies in working with students at the middle school level developing a musical skill set that will last a lifetime. Her dream is to keep students engaged by incorporating technology in a performance-based classroom. It is her quest to keep music active and alive for the next generation of learners to appreciate, enjoy, and partake.

Ellenwood is a member of Michigan Schools Band and Orchestra Association, Music Educators National Conference, International Trumpet Guild, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Golden Key International Honor Society, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She is the recipient of a Saginaw News Crystal Apple Award in May of 2006, and was nominated again in 2007 and 2009. She has also been recognized in Who's Who Among American Teachers, Who's Who In North American Education, Who's Who Among American Women and Who's Who Among Executives and Professionals.
