  • Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV (1888PressRelease) March 29, 2011 - Top spellers from Page, Rockingham and Shenandoah counties faced off Saturday, March 5th in the 2011 Rockingham District Ruritan Spelling Bee for a chance to advance to the National Scripts competition held in Washington, D.C. The competition was broadcast live on public television station WVPT, and was co-sponsored by CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union, The Daily News Record, The Rockingham Group and Frazier Quarry, with additional support provided by Dynamic Aviation and Best Buy.

    Students from grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 competed for 90 minutes, with eighth grader David Goyne coming out on top by spelling the final word "Gazelle". David attends Cornerstone Christian School in Harrisonburg, and will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C for himself and a parent to attend the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May. David also received a Webster's Third New International Dictionary, a $100 Series EE U.S. Savings Bond as part of the Samuel Louis Sugarman Award, a plaque to commemorate the event and a certificate from Best Buy for a new laptop. The Second Place Winner was 8th grade student Alexandra Price, who attends Thomas Harrison Middle School. Third Place winner was Anthony Malabad, a seventh-grader who attends Wilbur S. Pence Middle School.
