  • (1888PressRelease) July 13, 2011 - The grand finale of the second annual National Children's Poetry competition, hosted by SG World in support of the Whizz-Kidz charity, took place on Monday 27th June at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Attended by Whizz-Kidz patrons Sam & Mark, the event saw the nine winners (detailed below) recite their poems for an audience of celebrities, poets, pupils, teachers and parents. Three overall champions were then selected by Cheshire's Poet Laureate, Terry Fox.

The National Poetry Competition was created to promote the importance of creativity in primary and secondary schools and to raise funds for Whizz-Kidz, its chosen charity. The one-day event also saw teachers pitted against each other in a series of X-Box Kinect games, entertaining their pupils by jumping, dodging and kicking their way through a series of adventures set in exotic locations.

Steve Floodgate, director at SG World, paid tribute to the work of the 2011 entrants: "The entries to this year's competition were inspiring and thought-provoking and the judges really had their work cut out for them. This competition was created to celebrate creativity and encourage awareness of the world around us and of the challenges faced by the children that Whizz-Kidz campaigns for. We supply thousands of schools across the country and this is a chance for us to give something back, not just to the pupils and teachers but also in support of a fantastic charity."

Sam & Mark, added "It was a pleasure to attend and hear some brilliant poetry by some creative school children - especially as it helped raise funds for Whizz-Kidz' fantastic work getting kids independent."

Rachel Dring, community fundraising manager for Whizz-Kidz, commented: "It's fantastic to see just how many young people were willing to get stuck into being creative! We're really impressed with the quality of entries and want to say a huge thank you to Sam & Mark for helping to host the event, and SG World for selecting Whizz-Kidz as the charity partner for such a lovely competition. Raising the profile of Whizz-Kidz helps us take a step further in our aim to ensure that every disabled child has an opportunity to be something special…a kid."

Each winner received an Xbox Kinect games console and each of the three champions also received a state of the art flat screen TV. In addition, each champion's school was awarded a cheque for £1000 and a year's access to SG World's popular Vis-IT Vistor Management Software.

SG World is a leading provider of visitor management, identification, health and safety, security and finance solutions to commercial organisations, schools, local government, leisure and health care.
