  • Providence-Fall River-Warwick, RI-MA (1888PressRelease) January 24, 2011 - A few trees were spared in the making of this year's annual report for Butler Hospital. Rather than a document printed on paper, the 2010 annual report can be viewed at www.butler.org/2010report.

Butler Hospital's first web-based annual report will save 500 pounds of paper (almost four trees), about 1,000 kilowatts of energy and 1,750 gallons of water, as well as prevent 15 pounds of air pollution (see footnote). It is one small step the hospital is taking to help preserve the environment, but one that will make a lasting impact over time.

"We are excited to be able to share and celebrate Butler Hospital's 2010 accomplishments with the community in a format that is not only environmentally-friendly, but also more creative and engaging," said Patti Melaragno, director of Marketing and Public Affairs.

Much like past reports, this year's online version contains information on research developments, year-end financials, patient care statistics and staff recognition. It also contains more interactive elements such as the video "Discover Butler," which creatively describes the type of care the hospital provides and the compelling reasons why the staff is so committed to the work they do everyday. Also featured as part of the report is "In their own words," a video in which real people tell their own stories of treatment and recovery. Another interactive element allows people to immediately comment on the annual report, providing valuable community feedback to the hospital.

Previously, the 32-page 8.5"x11"annual report was printed and mailed to 2,000 people. This year, the hospital is printing 2,000 6"x9" postcards on recycled paper, mailing most of them to 1,600 recipients and distributing the rest at events during the next few months. As a result, Butler Hospital will save significantly on printing, postage and labor costs. The postcard provides the online address and a QR code that links to the report on the hospital's website. Smartphone users with a QR barcode reader can scan the code with the camera on their cell phone and view the report on their mobile device.

Founded in 1844, Butler Hospital is Rhode Island's only private, nonprofit psychiatric and substance abuse hospital for adults, adolescents, children, and seniors. Butler is affiliated with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and is the flagship hospital for its department of psychiatry, which has been recognized by its peers as one of the top ten in the United States. A national leader in the development of acute psychiatric and substance abuse treatment, Butler is involved in a variety of research efforts which has earned it a national reputation as a major teaching and research facility.
