  • (1888PressRelease) March 01, 2012 - SONOMA, Calif - StudySync®, the browser-based supplemental curriculum from BookheadEd Learning, LLC, today announced its support for The Lexile Framework for Reading, a valuable resource developed by MetaMetrics® that accurately matches readers with text. StudySync will provide Lexile measures for its entire curriculum-350 classic and modern texts.

An innovative, web‐delivered academic tool, StudySync was created by leading national educators with the goal of inspiring higher levels of critical thinking and academic collaboration. Aligned to the Common Core State Standards, StudySync targets middle and high school students. This learning program enlists broadcast-quality video, digital media, mobile platforms and social learning to advance students' reading, writing and critical thinking abilities.

The Lexile Framework is a unique tool for accurately matching readers with text. Unlike other measurement systems, the Lexile Framework evaluates reading ability and growth based on actual assessment results, rather than generalized age or grade levels. Lexile measures help teachers, librarians and parents find books, articles and other resources within a reader's recommended Lexile range: 100L below to 50L above his or her Lexile measure.

"Lexile measures are recognized as the most widely used reading metrics - they're powerful tools for connecting learners of all ages with materials at the right level of challenge and monitoring their progress toward goals and standards," said Robert Romano, BookheadEd CEO. "Our incorporation of Lexile measures extends our support for the Common Core, and complements our ongoing effort to provide as many relevant tools as possible to teachers and administrators throughout middle and secondary education. Lexile measures have the added benefit of supporting our commitment to social learning, since the appropriate grouping of students makes collaboration even deeper."

"The Lexile scale is a teacher's collaborator," said Hal Ober, Director of Education, StudySync. "By estimating readability levels based on vocabulary and complexity, Lexile can be a good predictor of access: which texts are in a student's comfort zone, which ones offer a good stretch, and which ones might be too tough going. As descriptors, the Lexile levels are just as valuable as the subject categories and text introductions in the StudySync library."

"Using Lexile measures enables teachers to better select texts based on their students' reading abilities," said Ryan Bubalo, Education Accounts Manager, StudySync. "StudySync teachers now have a guide to our library that will open them to a wide range of texts appropriate for their students. The Lexile feature is a great tool for teachers who may feel in a rut teaching the same texts year in and year out. Lexile measures enable them to branch out to new text selections with the confidence that their choices align with their students' reading abilities. The tool is particularly useful for teachers implementing differentiated instruction or students on ILPs (Individual Learning Plans)."

Reading materials within the optimal Lexile range will challenge the individual's reading ability, while still maintaining interest and learning. Tens of millions of students worldwide now receive a Lexile measure that helps them to find targeted text from a universe of more than 400 million articles, books and websites.
