  • Davenport-Moline-Rock Island, IA-IL (1888PressRelease) October 12, 2010 - Rachel Henning, Teacher for Black Hawk Elementary School, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry.

Henning, who earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Mount Senario College in 2002, began teaching first grade that fall in Wadesboro, North Carolina. After spending five years teaching in North Carolina and coaching the girls JV basketball team for three of those years, Henning eventually moved back to be closer to her hometown in Iowa.

Upon accepting a teaching position in the Burlington Community District of Iowa, Henning began working for their statewide preschool program. The program, which is free to all four-year-olds, is a program that supports all those parents that cannot afford to send their child to a private preschool. With morning and afternoon sessions with twenty students in each class, she uses the Creative Curriculum program. "Our classroom is setup in areas, with blocks, dramatic play, toys and games, art, the library, discover, sand and water, music and movement, cooking, computers, and outdoors," Henning explained. She said that she also does home visits with all parents, and strives to teach her children the alphabet. "I teach the sounds of letters using Jolly Phonics. I am just amazed each year how some of these children are reading at the end of preschool," she said.

When Henning began teaching preschool, she had to learn about the program and the curriculum. She has taken the Every Child Reads for three to five years old, as well as the creative curriculum class and math creative curriculum.

After being inspired during a high school Child Development class she took in high school, Henning, the past eight years have been very rewarding. She hopes to pursue her master's degree in education next year after this year's Iowa Quality Preschool Program Standards is assessed. She is a member of the National Education Association and the Burlington Reading Council. In her spare time, Rachel donates and volunteers with the Greyhound Program, and also enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and outdoor activities.
