  • Rochester, NY (1888PressRelease) May 24, 2011 - Merry Lou Holley, Retired Principal for Genesee Valley BOCES, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Merry Lou Holley's commitment to excellence in Education.

Holley, who holds an Associate's, Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Education, all from SUNY, and a second Master's Degree in Educational Administration, also from SUNY, and is certified in advanced studies and educational administration, began teaching in 1976 with children of special needs.

Having worked with all ages and disabilities from mild to severe, Holley taught until 1984 when she began an administrative internship for a full year. From there she went on to become assistant director of special education, and later in the role as principal of special education until retirement.

As principal, Holley appropriately placed children into their special programs, providing qualified staff to provide services that were needed. Depending on the particular year, she supervised anywhere from one hundred twenty five to two hundred fifty staff members. She recruited, hired and evaluated staff, oversaw curriculum development and implementation and developed and administered a multi-million dollar budget. In addition, Holley researched and implemented new programs, worked as a liaison with twenty-two school districts and supervised student discipline and transportation of special needs students, following local, state and federal education law compliance.

"My areas of expertise included students with emotional and behavioral disabilities, assistance for students with autism and training in discipline, crisis intervention and alternate assessment for the severely disabled," Holley explained.

Having had her father on the school board for twenty-five years during her childhood, Holley knew a lot about the education field and always wanted to become a teacher after high school. But after becoming one, she realized that she could do more by taking on more of a leadership role.

Currently retired, Holley focuses her free time on her family. She also volunteers with her local church, the SnackPaks for Kids program, the American Red Cross, Special Olympics and the American Cancer Society. She also sings in her church choir, the Genesee Chorale, and sings and plays the baritone saxophone in a swing band. Merry Lou is also a member of the American Association of Retired
    Citizens.
