  • Altoona, PA (1888PressRelease) March 02, 2012 - Joanne Tosti-Vasey, Executive Committee At-Large Member for Pennsylvania NOW, Inc., has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Joanne Tosti-Vasey's commitment to excellence in Government and Public Policy.

    Tosti-Vasey, who holds a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University, an MS in Management Housing and Family Development from Virginia Tech, and a BS in Clothing Textiles and Related Arts, also from Virginia Tech, began working for women's equality in 1979 on a volunteer basis.

    Having served as president for her current organization from January 2006 to December of 2011, Tosti-Vasey now serves as an at-large member of the seven-member executive committee. During her time as president, she directed board meetings, ran the administrative office, and wrote blogs, tweets, technical reports and press releases. She also spoke regularly to advocate for women's, children's, minority and Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTW) rights, as well as lobbied for changes in legislation to help eliminate discrimination and achieve equality for all. She conducted numerous workshops on gender rights, disability rights, and also on healthcare reform. Tosti-Vasey also organized national and statewide conferences for women and people with disabilities, making sure that participation by and topics covered included people of color and LGBTQ individuals. She also spent twelve previous years as the organization's treasurer.

    Inspired by numerous personal events, including racial and sexual discrimination and pay inequality, in addition to overcoming leukemia, of which she was given less than a year to live, she decided to start her local NOW chapter, saying, "I hope to continue working for social justice and equality, to use my research, writing, organizing, and public speaking abilities to fight back against the backlash on women and minority rights so that all people in the US have a fair playing ground upon which to work and achieve their own goals."

    Tosti-Vasey is a member of the National Organization for Women, National NOW Destigmatizing Abortion ad hoc Committee, National Association of Professional Women, Phi Kappa Phi Academic Honorary Society, Omicron Nu Home Economics Honorary Society, Mortar Board Senior Honorary Society and Phi Upsilon Omicron Home Economics Honorary Society. She is also a fellow for the Pennsylvania Political Leaders Fellowship, Center for Progressive Leadership. She has served as co-author of both the 2004 and 2009 Status of Women in Pennsylvania Report, authorized by the Pennsylvania Commission for Women, and is also a recipient of a Pennsylvania State University Undergraduate Student Government Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Service in 1985.
