  • Portland-Vancouver, OR-WA (1888PressRelease) December 11, 2010 - Clair Thomas, Natural Resource Education Coordinator for Tillamook School District, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Clair Thomas's commitment to excellence in Education.

Thomas, who holds a Bachelor's Degree in Biology and Pre-Med from George Fox University, followed by a Master's Degree in Entomology from Oregon State University, began teaching in 1979 at Santiam Christian High School. But it wasn't until 1987 that he began conducting research and later running an Apprenticeship in Science and Engineering program through Portland State University, followed by a project lead position in 2004.

In 2005, Thomas took a position at his local high school to craft a National Resource Education Program for the school district. As coordinator, he designs educational experiences that focus on local resources, their ecology, use and sustainability. He works with local industries, agencies, and grantors to create funded projects that target local environmental issues. He also works with individual students as well as classes to design and carry out research projects that can be entered in the International Science and Engineering Fair system. "Spending twenty-six years in the classroom," Thomas said, "incorporating research into the curriculum has aided me tremendously in designing comprehensive curriculum through all grade levels." He noted that his experiences in forestry and aquatic research, coupled with his background in entomology, has also given him a wide range of past projects to use as models in crafting new projects.

Inspired by his high school biology teacher and later his college advisor, Thomas knew that pursuing outdoor education would fulfill his career goals. Currently, he aspires to create a natural resource institute to unite teachers and researchers and promote community changing research and projects in both public and private schools.

Thomas is the recipient of numerous awards, including being named Teacher of the Year for Lake County in 1989, Oregon State Science Teacher of the Year Finalist in 1991, Oregon State Outstanding Advisor Award in 1996, Radioshack National Teacher Award for Outstanding Teacher in 1999, District Teacher of the Year through the Oregon Association of Conservation in 2001, a Recognition Award through Lakeview Federal Sustained Yield Unit Working Group in 2002, a Dedicated Service Award through Fremont-Winema National Forest Resource Advisory Council in 2004, a Network of Oregon Watershed Councils Award in 2009, and most recently, a Tillamook County Futures Council Achievement Award in Natural Sciences in 2010. In his free time, Clair hosts third party monitoring projects in the summers, and enjoys hiking, mountain climbing and bicycling.
