Thonsgaard, Doctor of Curriculum, Instruction and Reading for Jersey Village High School, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Brenda D. Thonsgaard's commitment to excellence in Education.

    Thonsgaard, who holds an EdD in Education, Language, Curriculum and Instruction, is a twenty-one year veteran in the field. Her expertise are in curriculum and instruction and language acquisition.

    In her role as a high school educator, Thonsgaard tests and evaluates students that are suspected or have characteristics of dyslexia. She also teaches reading classes to dyslexia students and second language learners who have only been in the United States for a short time. "My leadership and problem solving skills in my profession have made me a success," she explained. "Without leadership and problem solving skills I would be unable to foster an environment that would maximize student learning."

    Hoping to teach language development courses at the college level, Thonsgaard would like to broaden her understanding of adult second language learning. She also plans to publish works that describe her experiences and techniques for working with students who are second language learners or at-risk of dropping out of school.

    When Thonsgaard is not busy at school, she dedicates much of her time to volunteerism. The Kisumu Project, Inc. and Migosi Family Focus Self-Help Group in Kenya are two of the organizations where she partakes in fundraising, project development and public relations. Additionally, she does public speaking works to find potential donors for non-profit programs. She is spends her time working with programs in the Girl Scouts of America.

    Thonsgaard is a member of the International Reading Association and National Council for Teachers' of English. She's the recipient of a Teacher of the Year Award at Helms Community Learning Center for the Houston Independent School District in 1994, was named Spotlight Teacher for Jersey Village High School in 2004, was awarded three instructional development grants and co-wrote two community development grants that brought in over $1 million to her school and local community. She's also served as guest speaker for instructional development projects at the 2004 Spotlight Teacher of the Year banquet and has done numerous presentations at professional teacher conferences and conventions statewide and nationally. Thonsgaard has also been the honored speaker for instructional, classroom and community development projects and presenter at conferences statewide and nationally. In her free time, Brenda also enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with her family.
