  • Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point, NC (1888PressRelease) April 14, 2011 - A. Barry Nelson, President and Chief Geologist of Northwest GeoScience, PC, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes A. Barry Nelson's commitment to excellence in Environmental and Geoscience Consulting.

Nelson, who holds a Bachelor's of Science in Geology from North Carolina University and a Master's Degree in Environmental Management from Duke University, began working as a geologist in the fall of 1979, involved in the evaluation of flood hazards on streams and rivers in North Carolina.

In his current role, Nelson serves as chief operating officer, involved in the daily business aspects of the firm. He is also responsible for directing business development activities, strategic planning and financial management. In addition, he is the chief technical professional with the ultimate responsibility of directing all consulting projects. Having a broad based technical background in geology, hydrology and civil engineering, Nelson has worked in project and business development, and has managed geological consulting groups for three other engineering consulting firms over the past thirty-two years.

"After changing my college major from civil engineering to geosciences, thanks to a college professor who taught an introductory course in geology, and seeing the complexity of the earth's natural systems, I was hooked," Nelson said about his career choice. Since then, he has never looked back.

Hoping to grow the business and generate ten million dollars annually in consulting fees and be able to move from a chief executive officer and chief geologist position into project development, Nelson would like to expand the areas of service. He also hopes to include an earth science educational group that works with high schools and universities to teach the need for applying earth science concepts to solve environmental problems.

Nelson is a licensed geologist in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. He's a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and American Institute of Professional Geologists, and has been named to Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Business and Finance and America's Registry of Outstanding Professionals. In his free time, A. Barry enjoys playing golf.
