  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) July 08, 2010 - For the fifth consecutive year, Adelphi University has been rated a "Best Buy" in higher education by the Fiske Guide to Colleges. The University is one of 45 institutions-21 public and 24 private-to be recognized by the best-selling college guide. According to the publisher, to be qualified as a "Best Buy" institution, Edward B. Fiske takes into account many qualities such as: "four- or five-star academic ratings, inexpensive or moderate price category, and quality of student life on campus." The updated guide, directed at college applicants and their families, is an annual review of "more than 300 of the country's best and most interesting institutions in the nation."

"Adelphi University is committed to remaining a world-class, affordable higher education institution with outstanding and relevant academic programs. In addition, through rich campus experiences, our students are prepared for promising careers, engaged citizenship, and fulfilling intellectual and emotional lives," said Adelphi President Robert A. Scott. "We are honored and excited that the Fiske Guide has yet again identified the University for its continued vitality and named us to this elite list."

Adelphi University is a center of intellectual and creative learning. The academic programs evolve to reflect the needs and interests of society and the student population from 41 states and 63 foreign countries. Dedicated Adelphi professors, who are leaders and pioneers in their fields, serve as mentors and are invested in making sure students are supported in small classes and through nearly 700 internship opportunities and 80 student-led clubs and organizations. Since 1896, our students have benefited from an academically rich and globally relevant education in a challenging yet supportive environment.

The University's success can be measured in a number of important ways, including recognition of the excellence of our faculty scholarship and teaching, growth in the magnitude of alumni giving, an enhanced local and national reputation, and improvements in our retention and graduation rates. In addition, we have completed transformational U.S. Green Building Council L.E.E.D. certified green construction projects and made significant investments in our 75-acre Garden City campus, including an extensive new performing arts center, and recreation and sports complex.

Student-athletes compete in 22 Division I and II intercollegiate sports as well as in an array of intramural activities. This year, the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team captured its second consecutive NCAA Division II National Championship, and became the first D II women's program to repeat as champions and improve their tally to an NCAA record four titles. Adelphi will also host the 2011 Women's Lacrosse Championship, becoming the first host for the Division II and III Women's Lacrosse Championship from the state of New York. It will be a first class experience for the fans and student-athletes participating.

The revised and updated 2011 edition of Fiske Guide to Colleges features 45 of the "Best Buy" schools. These institutions are based on the quality of academic offerings in relation to the cost of attendance. To determine this illustrious list, Fiske researchers combined the cost data with academic and other life-style information about each college and university to determine what institutions offer really remarkable educational opportunities at a relatively modest cost.

Students, parents and high school counselors trust and recommend Edward B. Fiske and the Fiske Guide to Colleges because it is entirely independent. The guide offers neither advertising nor collects fees from any of the colleges it covers. The Fiske Guide's only goal is to help future students select the best colleges to reach their own goals in a price range that is manageable for their personal circumstances.
