Assemblymember Mike Davis, Congresswoman Karen Bass and Channel 11 News, Christine Devine Champion Causes to Help Give Foster Youth the Advantage They So Desperately Need

May is Foster Care Awareness Month and while Living Advantage, Inc. - a leading advocate for foster and homeless youth in Los Angeles - is commemorating 17 years of service, they have much more to celebrate.

California's elected officials Assemblymember Mike Davis and Congresswoman Karen Bass have joined their cause by taking huge steps in the political arena to help bridge the path between foster care youth and the services they need to succeed. With government backing, Living Advantage is able to spotlight the lack of resources available to the underserved foster population, while creating opportunities to implement change and create reform that's so desperately needed in the foster care system.

Davis has authored Assembly Bill 1148 for a Virtual Assistant Living and Education Program to ensure youth in foster care have a voice. Congresswoman Bass also continues to be an advocate for foster kids and has carried several bills to support programs and funding to ensure foster youth have better chances for success. This includes legislation that uses federal funds to extend support to California's foster youth to the age of 21, as well as legislation that helps California draw down a share of federal family connection grants.

Celebrity, Channel 11 News, Christine Devine is known for her Wednesday's Child adoption segment. Since 1994 she has profiled foster children looking for adoptive homes, resulting in more than 500 adoptions. In 2009, she was honored in D.C. with a congressional award.

In its 17 years of service, Living Advantage has decreased the "disconnect of services" to L.A.'s youth and has become "the link" through outreach and education to the community. Utilizing innovative technology, social networking and media, the organization strives to assist youth in having access to the necessary resources, services and tools they need to be self sufficient and have a much higher rate of success transitioning into the community.

On June 2nd, California Assemblymember Mike Davis is the Honorary Chair for Living Advantage's 2nd Annual "Foster Youth Salute You" VIP Fundraiser Reception. This year's theme is "Innovative Services Changing the Face of Foster Care" to expand on the historical effects that technology is having on the foster care system. And to also acknowledge the advancements in its Virtual Assistant Living and Educational (VALE) program, which is a secure e-data collection and storage web application that maintains vital life documents, including birth certificates and social security cards, for foster youth as they move through the foster system.

Coming together with Living Advantage again, Assemblymember Davis, and special guest, Congresswoman Bass, 90210 and Cougar Town, May Wang, 102.3 FM, Adai Lamar, Singer, Cindy Ashton, who will help honor Los Angeles County Juvenile Court Judge Nash for his efforts to foster youth legal rights.

The "Foster Youth Salute You" fundraising reception will take place Thursday, June 2nd from 6-9pm at the City Club on Bunker Hill located at 333 South Grand Avenue, 54th Floor in downtown Los Angeles. The event is hosted by the University of Southern California (USC) and Beverly Hills OB/GYN Dr. David L. Finke.
