  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) March 14, 2012 - The YWCA Bergen County, N.J., will host its 38th Annual Tribute to Women & INdustry (TWIN) awards dinner on Thursday, April 19 at 5:45 p.m. This year's gala event will be held at the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel and will be headlined by Brig. Gen. (U.S. Army, Ret.) Rebecca Halstead, an inspiring example of the expanding roles of women in American society today.

The TWIN awards program honors women for significant contributions to their companies in managerial, executive or professional roles. It also recognizes their sponsoring companies for establishing progressive personnel policies and for providing women with opportunities for advancement. This year's honorees are still being selected and include candidates in the medical, financial, information, insurance, retail and manufacturing fields, along with those in the military and civic affairs.

"The TWIN awards program is an example of the commitment we've shown to empowering women throughout our 92-year history," said Helen Archontou, chief executive officer of the YWCA Bergen County. "It is the longest running awards event of its kind in the tri-state area and has become a model program used by YWCAs across the country."

Proceeds from the event help to support the YWCA Bergen County's diverse women's health programs. The organization's childcare programs and summer camps also receive support, as well as the YWCA's Rape Crisis Center, which provides comprehensive services ranging from prevention programs to 24/7 crisis intervention for victims of sexual violence.

Brigadier General (U.S. Army, Ret.) Rebecca Halstead, the gala dinner's keynote speaker, was the first female Commanding General to lead troops in combat in Iraq. She is also the first female graduate of West Point to be promoted to General Officer and the first woman to have a room named after her at West Point's famed Thayer Hotel. She now heads a leadership consultancy company, STEADFAST Leadership.

Since its inception in 1975, TWIN has recognized more than 2,000 women and 200+ companies. Many corporate partners have been TWIN sponsors for 10, 20, and even 30 years, recognizing outstanding female employees for their business and community achievements. The sponsoring companies for the 2012 TWIN include Cytec Industries, Inc. and CPR Strategic Marketing Communications at the Leader level; Hackensack University Medical Center, PSE&G, Stryker, The Valley Hospital and Unilever at the Benefactor level; Boiling Springs Savings Bank, ITT, Mercedes Benz, PNC, Roche, Sharp Electronics Corporation, United Water and Valley Home Care at the Friend level; and BAE SYSTEMS - NES, Bergen Regional Medical Center, KPMG LLP, and Van Dyk at the Patron level.
